Politics of India

Politics of India is an extremely complex and interwoven subject. The intention is to differentiate it, the domestic politics of India, from the international affairs of India as mentioned in Indian politics.

The focus here is on gaining sufficient understanding of the overall situation within India in order to apply the guidance given in the significant sections on Succeed in Politics and Politics How To sections.

Political factors

In gaining an understanding of how to succeed in Indian politics, it may be helpful to understand some of the factors that are common in terms of political movers and shakers. To an extent that it not apparent in other leading democracies, the political leadership in India may be occupy any one of a variety of roles. In particular, the power seems to often exist in the political party organization rather than in the publicly elected roles. There also seem to be significant positions of influence within the non-elected roles in Government. These roles are described in many countries as Public Servants but are generally referred to in India as Civil Servants or in the Civil Service.

In all areas of politics, there are regular allegations of corruption. This, and the prosecutions that do occur, suggest that those in power will be open to offers of bribery. Accordingly, in deciding whether you wish to enter a political career, it is important to decide what will be your position. In particular, will be be able to maintain your position in the face of the type of pressure that will be exerted upon you.

Entry point

One of the other key considerations in terms of an Indian political career is to determine the appropriate level of government in which to become involved. While your entry point does not preclude change, it will make it more difficult to achieve your desired goal. This is especially important in determining the most relevant organization (eg political party) with which to get involved.

The purpose of this section is to give some introduction and to provoke some thought. A more detailed assessment at a later stage will attempt to provide some specifics. This will look at the effects on that decision of birthplace, religion, education and existing contacts.

Tied in with that decision is the appropriate organization for further involvement. In many democracies, the same political parties operate across the entire country at all levels of government. In India, there are some national parties but there are also very significant parties that operate only within certain States. In a similar vein, the ease of transfer between different levels of the Civil Service is not as simple in India as it is in many other countries. Even within some of the other politically associated groups, there are not easy paths to transfer back and forward between different cities, States and areas of focus. The complexity of the Politics of India demands that, in order to maximize your success, you need solid research before committing to a particular career.

The combination of all these factors is that it is far more important to make the right decisions at the beginning of your political career. Therefore, even greater research and wider reading is very important. Similarly, establishing your own part-time business in order to have a separate source of funds is very worthwhile.

In order to place matters in perspective, it may be useful to review some of the material about other countries.
